Our History

Hamilton Video & Sound Limited was founded in 1965 through partnership with past co-workers;   Bodo Luehmann, William Moore and Alvin Nelles.     Sharing similar backgrounds and passion in electronics and emerging audio-visual technology, together they built a highly-responsive and reputable service business having core values - integrity, accountability and diversity.

The Cable TV industry continued to grow in the 60’s and there was a great demand for residential cable installations.   HVS answered this call, with its primary focus in providing quality cable-TV installation services for the TV industry throughout the Hamilton region and south-western Ontario.

As economics improved in subdivisions as more cable TV subscribers came on, there were situations where cable-TV wasn’t possible. HVS would instead install antennas and distribute TV signals to multiple locations within a complex.  HVS expanded its coax distribution abilities to service apartment complexes, schools, hotels and hospitals.  Many hospitals across Ontario would call on HVS to install systems for in-room TV services for patients.

Our strong TV-system work association with Hospitals and many health-care related institutions across south-western Ontario eventually forged a new major area of business and expertise for HVS; Nurse-call communication systems.   HVS quickly took position as a leading Nurse-call integrator and service provider.  HVS notably was the first company in North America to interface a Nurse-call system with a wireless phone system.

HVS’s forte in working with complex cabling networks didn’t end with CATV and Nurse-Call.    Institutions of all capacities – academic, correctional and industry - would call on HVS for complete Paging and Intercom solutions.  In addition, HVS enjoyed tremendous growth in Pro Audio system business, installing mixers, amplifiers and loud-speakers for a wide array of applications such as  School auditoriums, Recreation Centres and Corporate Conference Facilities.

Our early experience in designing and installing sophisticated coax/cable-TV systems helped usher-in our strong-surveillance camera business of today.  In the early 90’s, HVS was subcontracted to install the province’s first MTO highway surveillance cameras connected then by analogue coax.   The Hamilton Steel industry called on HVS for a variety of solutions, from back-up cameras on giant tractors, to conveyer systems, to infrared cameras installed inside large lake freighters.

As we entered Y2K, our industry was introduced to new “digital” technologies and interfaces.  It was an exciting time when televisions went flat, image storage became digital, surveillance cameras became network-attached, and the shift to “High-Definition” was just starting to become economically accepted in professional markets.   Our commercial projector business expanded and showed no sign of slowing down.

In 2004 HVS expanded further adding a new department with a primary focus in sales and rentals of Professional and Broadcast video products and solutions.  Filmmakers, Videographers, Schools and Churches have come to rely on HVS as the region’s source for quality production equipment, from Pro-Camcorders, Recorders and Editing Systems, to Reference Displays and Live Switchers.
